Heritage Building - Te Puni Kokiri, Wellington

Mesh Coatings were engaged by McKee Fehl to come up with a solution for the exterior plaster system to the iconic TPK building on the corner of Stout St and Lambton Quay in Wellingtons CBD. The building is listed as a heritage 1 building and all work had to meet the requirements of the resource consent set by the Wellington City Council.

The main scope of the job required all loose external plaster (that had been falling onto the pavement below) to be removed, concrete and steel repairs carried out and then finished with the Sto Armat reinforced plaster system and RFP Sponge finish coat.

The building was originally constructed in concrete and plastered with a decorative quartz plaster. As it was a heritage building, many of the materials were no longer available, therefore Mesh worked with Sto (one of our key suppliers) to source materials from all over the world, to provide an innovative solution and a plaster finish to match the existing.

Whilst the main scope of the work was to replace the plaster exterior, we also repaired deteriorating decks on the building, by demolishing the existing plaster, creating new falls and providing a new Matacryl membrane system to ensure durability. We also worked, in accordance with the resource consent, to replace mastic asphalt roofs and install new copper work throughout the building.

Thanks to the skilled craftsmanship of the Mesh workers on the TPK building, this icon on the Wellington landscape can stand proud for many more years to come.
